Graveyard level

Verified against the spelunky.ai port v0.1.10 on .

A graveyard level is a special Jungle level of Spelunky Classic, with graves that hide treasure and Zombies and Vampires in place of its usual monsters.

A graveyard level is a level of the Jungle laid out as any other, but with graves standing on its ground, most with treasure buried under them. The dead walk there: Zombies and Vampires take the place of the Jungle's ground monsters, Dead Fish swim in place of Piranhas, and piles of bones that may rise as Skeletons are eleven times as common. The Jungle's idol room becomes the Crystal Skull's. The level opens with "THE DEAD ARE RESTLESS!".

Generation

#

Every level of the Jungle makes the roll, 1 in 10, after its path is laid [3] [4]. It's separate from the other special levels' rolls, so a graveyard can be a flooded level or a dark level as well. It can be the Black Market too, one market in ten, which never says so (Black Market) [5].

It opens with "THE DEAD ARE RESTLESS!" [6]. On a dark level, the message comes after the dark level's, and on a flooded level the lake's comes after it, as "YOU HEAR RUSHING WATER..." if the level is dark too [7] [8] [5] (Flooded level). In the clip, level 8 loads as a graveyard, with graves on the ground; the player whips a Zombie, kills two Bats, and is bitten by a second Zombie before he jumps on it [9].

A graveyard level. Level 8 of the Jungle loads as a graveyard, with the message "THE DEAD ARE RESTLESS!" Graves stand on the ground. The player whips a zombie, kills two bats, and is bitten by a second zombie before he jumps on it.

The graves

#

Level generation goes over every block of earth, and puts a grave on top of one with a 1 in 20 chance, if nothing is there (a block, the entrance or the exit) and it isn't in one of the six columns that flank the borders between rooms (x 160, 176, 320, 336, 480 and 496) [10]. A grave is solid, one of five headstones at random, and breaks when the block under it does [11] [12].

The level's top border is earth with nothing over it inside the level, so most graveyard levels have a grave or more above the top, out of sight, their treasure sealed in the border's rock [5] [13].

The Crystal Skull's room

#

The room that would hold the Jungle's Golden Idol (a side room's 1 in 9, once a level, once the roll for Kali's altar fails) holds the Crystal Skull instead: a tomb of temple stone with the skull inside, four piles of bones around it, which are always rising bones, and two push blocks [14] [15] [5]. Picking up the skull brings the Ghost, if there's none on the level yet [16] [17].

Inhabitants

#

The ground's monsters are made on top of blocks with open space above, outside the entrance's room, whether or not there's water above [18]:

MonsterWhereChance
ZombieOn top of a block1 in 25[19]
VampireOn top of a block1 in 160, once the Zombie's fails[20]
BatHanging under a block1 in 60, where other Jungle levels have 1 in 80[21]
Dead FishIn the water1 in 30 for each water tile[22]
MonkeyOn a vine1 in 15 for each vine tile[23]
SkeletonRising from a pile of bones, one pile in eight (below)Bones eleven times as likely[24] [25]
ScarabHanging under a block, on a dark level only1 in 40[26]

So level generation makes no Mantraps, Cavemen, Frogs, Fire Frogs or Piranhas on a graveyard level, and makes Zombies, Vampires and Dead Fish nowhere else [27]. The Ghost comes to a player who stays too long, as on every level [28].

The graves' treasure

#

Each grave may bury something in the block it stands on: a Shotgun for an Ash grave, or else gold or a gem, if the block holds no treasure already [29]:

WhatChance
An Ash grave, with a free Shotgun1 in 40[30]
A Gold Nugget1 in 2, once the Ash grave's roll fails[31]
A Big Sapphire1 in 4, once those fail[32]
A Big Emerald1 in 6, once those fail[33]
A Big Ruby1 in 8, once those fail[34]
NothingOnce those fail[35]

The game means to make one Ash grave a level at most, but the flag it sets isn't the one it checks, so every grave rolls its 1 in 40 afresh, and a level can have two or more (Several Ash graves) [5] [36].

Two Ash graves on one level. A graveyard level opens with two Ash graves in view, each with a free Shotgun buried in the block under it. The game means to make at most one, but the flag it sets is never the one it checks.

Treasure and shops

#

Treasure is scattered as on any Jungle level, but piles of bones, each a Skeleton waiting to rise one time in eight, are eleven times as likely: their roll is passed 10, which it adds to the 1 it needs to come up [24] [37] [25] [38] [39]. Shops come as on the Jungle's other levels.

Secrets

Trivia

#
  • The code spells the level's flag cemetary [2].
  • A grave's object has its own headstone sprite, which never shows: its create event always swaps it for one of five others [11] [5].

FAQ

#
How common is a graveyard level in Spelunky Classic?

Each level of the Jungle, 5 to 8, has a 1 in 10 chance of being one, whatever else it is: a flooded level, a dark level or the Black Market. It opens with "THE DEAD ARE RESTLESS!".

What monsters are on a graveyard level in Spelunky Classic?

Zombies and Vampires on the ground in place of the Jungle's Mantraps, Cavemen and Frogs, Dead Fish in the water in place of Piranhas, more Bats, and more piles of bones that rise as Skeletons.

What is in the graves in Spelunky Classic?

Most often a Gold Nugget, buried in the block under the grave, or else a big gem, or nothing. One grave in 40 is an Ash grave, with a free Shotgun buried under it.

Where is the Crystal Skull in Spelunky Classic?

On a graveyard level, in the room that would hold the Jungle's Golden Idol. Not every graveyard level has that room, and picking up the Crystal Skull brings the Ghost.

#
Crystal skull and the ghost. On a Jungle graveyard level, the player picks up the crystal skull in its stone tomb, and skeletons rise from the bones around it. A ghost drifts in from the side of the screen, through the walls, and kills him on touch.
