This page describes a secret.

The Hedjet is an equipment item in Spelunky Classic, sealed inside the Moai, that opens the way to the City of Gold and keeps the Ghost away.

Wearing it, the player can enter the City of Gold: the gold door on level 14 takes the Sceptre and opens only for him. It also keeps the Ghost away and lights up dark levels around him. It lies in a sealed chamber inside the Moai, a statue in one of the Ice Caves' levels, which only a death with the Ankh gets into. It's worn from the moment it's picked up until the game ends.

Effect

#
Gold door. Wearing the Hedjet, the player carries the Tomb Lord's sceptre to the gold door. The door takes the sceptre and opens, and he goes through it to the City of Gold.

Picking it up puts it on: the message "YOU GOT THE HEDJET! IT GLOWS A BRILLIANT WHITE." shows, the Hedjet disappears, and an icon of it joins the row under the hearts [2] [3]. It stays on until a new game starts, which clears it [4] [5].

The gold door

#

Level 14, the Temple's second, has a gold door, on top of a block that can't be destroyed [6] [7] [8]. Carrying the Sceptre, which the Tomb Lord of level 13 drops, into it opens it if the player wears the Hedjet: the door takes the Sceptre and turns into a way through to the City of Gold, the next level. Without the Hedjet, it says "THE SCEPTRE FITS... BUT NOTHING IS HAPPENING!" and stays shut [1] [9]. In the clip, the player, wearing the Hedjet, carries the Sceptre to the door, which opens, and goes through to the City of Gold [10].

The Ghost

#

A player who stays on a level too long is warned "A CHILL RUNS UP YOUR SPINE..." and then sent the Ghost. Wearing the Hedjet, neither happens, however long he stays [11]. The other things that bring a Ghost, taking a graveyard's idol and defiling one of Kali's altars too often, still do [12] [13].

Dark levels

#

On a dark level, the light around the player has a radius of 96 pixels minus 64 times the level's darkness [14]. Wearing the Hedjet, the darkness is 0, so the light reaches 96 pixels, as far as a flare's, and at full brightness, instead of about 38 pixels of dim light at the darkest [15]. The level's opening message changes too: "THE HEDJET SHINES BRIGHTLY." instead of "I CAN'T SEE A THING! I'D BETTER USE THESE FLARES!" [16].

Obtaining

#
Hedjet in the Moai. On the level with the Moai, the player, wearing an ankh, drops a bomb at his feet. The blast takes his last hearts, and the ankh revives him inside the Moai's sealed chamber, where he falls onto the Hedjet, picks it up and leaves by the Moai's own exit.

Inside the MoaiOne in every Moai[17]

The Moai comes once a game, on one of the Ice Caves' levels: level 9 one time in 4, level 10 one time in 3, level 11 one time in 2, and otherwise level 12 [18]. It's a statue in one of two rooms that hold it [19]. Inside it, its own exit and the Hedjet, free to take, sit in a chamber filled by a solid block that can't be destroyed [20], so it can't be dug or bombed into. The Ankh is the way in, though a Teleporter jump can land the player inside too [21]. When the player dies wearing it on a level with the Moai, while the Moai is active (near the view: things far outside it are switched off [22]), it revives him inside the Moai, removing the block, and he falls onto the Hedjet [21] [23]. The Moai's exit takes him on to the next level. In the clip, the player, wearing the Ankh, drops a Bomb at his feet; the blast takes his last hearts, the Ankh revives him inside the Moai, and he picks up the Hedjet [24].

The Ankh is sold only in the Black Market, levels 6 to 8, so the player has to carry it to the Moai's level without dying on the way. Nothing else makes a Hedjet, and the level editor has no tile for it.

Interactions

#
  • The Hedjet doesn't light the whole of a dark level: it widens the light around the player only, and flares and lamps light their own circles as before [25].
  • With the Sceptre, it's the City of Gold's key; either alone does nothing at the gold door [1].

Tips

#
  • Wearing the Hedjet, there's no need to hurry: the Ghost that the level's clock sends never comes.

Trivia

#
  • Its object is oCrown, its type "Crown", and its HUD icon sCrownIcon; only the pickup message and the dark level's message call it the Hedjet [26] [3] [27] [28].
  • Its price is $999,999 and its shop message "I SHOULDN'T BE SELLING THIS!"; no shop stocks it [29].

FAQ

#
How do you get the Hedjet in Spelunky Classic?

By dying with the Ankh near the Moai, on its level: the Ankh revives the player inside the Moai, a sealed chamber where the Hedjet lies. Nothing else opens the chamber, though a Teleporter jump can land inside it too.

What does the Hedjet do in Spelunky Classic?

It lets the Sceptre open the gold door to the City of Gold, keeps the Ghost from coming however long the player stays on a level, and widens the light around the player on dark levels.

Do you need the Hedjet to reach the City of Gold in Spelunky Classic?

Yes. Without it, the gold door only says "THE SCEPTRE FITS... BUT NOTHING IS HAPPENING!" when the player brings it the Sceptre.

Is the Hedjet the crown in Spelunky Classic?

Yes. The game's code calls it the Crown, but the message when it's picked up names it the Hedjet.
