Paste

Verified against the spelunky.ai port v0.1.10 on .

Paste is an equipment item in Spelunky Classic that makes the player's bombs sticky, so they stick to walls and to monsters; shops sell it from $3,000.

Wearing it, every Bomb the player throws or takes out is sticky: a lit one stops where it first touches a wall, the floor or the ceiling, and one thrown fast into a monster sticks to the monster and goes off on it. Bomb Shops and the Dice House offer it, every Giant Spider leaves one, and Crates, blocks and Kali give it away. It's worn from the moment it's picked up or paid for until the game ends.

Effect

#

Picking up a free paste, paying for one or carrying one out of a shop puts it on: the message "YOU GOT STICKY BOMBS!" shows, the paste disappears, and the bomb icon at the top of the screen becomes a sticky bomb's [3] [4]. It stays on until a new game starts, which clears it [5] [6].

With it, every bomb the player makes is sticky: the one the bomb key throws, and the one the item key puts in his hands [7] [8] [9].

Sticking to walls

#
Sticky bomb on a wall. Wearing paste, the player throws a bomb at the wall beside him. It sticks to the wall in mid-air and stays there as he runs off and falls down a shaft, until it goes off.

A lit sticky bomb that touches a wall, the floor or the ceiling stops dead, where an ordinary one bounces off [10] [11]. It then stays there, in mid-air if that's where it stuck, until it goes off. The clip shows one thrown at the wall beside the player sticking there in mid-air as he runs off [12].

Sticking to monsters

#
Sticky bomb on a yeti. Wearing paste, the player throws a bomb into a yeti. It sticks to the yeti and rides along on it as it walks, then goes off on it and kills it.

A sticky bomb moving faster than 2 pixels per step that touches a monster or a Damsel latches on: from then on, it moves with it, keeping the same distance from it [13] [14]. The monster it latches onto is the one whose position is nearest the bomb's, which isn't always the one it touched [15]. Latching takes the place of a thrown item's hit, so the bomb doesn't hurt the monster until it goes off [16]. The clip shows one thrown into a Yeti: it sticks to the Yeti's head and rides along as it walks, then goes off and kills it; the Yeti loses nothing when it's hit [17] [18].

Obtaining

SourceChance
Bomb Shop1 in 5 for each ware, or a Bomb Box or Bomb Bag[19]
The Dice House's prize1 in 8, once the rolls before it, from a Jetpack's 1 in 40 to a Mattock's 1 in 8, fail[20]
A Giant SpiderAlways, when it dies[21]
A Crate1 in 60, once the rolls before it, from a Jetpack's 1 in 500 to a Pitcher's Mitt's 1 in 80, fail[22]
Buried in a block1 in 19 of the items buried in blocks[23]
Kali's first gift1 in 8, or the next of the eight the player hasn't got[24]

A Bomb Shop stocks one only if the level hasn't got one already, even for a player who has the paste [25] [15], and it adds 10% of the base price for each level past the second [26]. Shops are made from level 2 on [27], and level 16, Olmec's Lair, has none:

Area1st level2nd level3rd level4th level
The Mines—$3,000$3,300$3,600
The Jungle$3,900$4,200$4,500$4,800
The Ice Caves$5,100$5,400$5,700$6,000
The Temple$6,300$6,600$6,900—

The Dice House puts its prize up from the same set of rare items, and a roll of seven gives it away and puts up another [28] [29]. A Giant Spider leaves its paste free whether it's killed hanging or after it drops [30]. Every block of rock away from the level's edges that isn't gold and holds no gem has a 1 in 1200 chance of hiding an item, one of nineteen at random [31] [23]. Kali's first gift, when the player's favour with her reaches 8 at one of her altars, is one of eight pieces of equipment the player hasn't got, the paste among them [32]. In custom levels, it's the level editor's tile u [33].

Carrying one out of a shop without paying puts it on and angers the Shopkeeper, as with any ware; whether it goes on at once depends on whether the player or the paste leaves the shop first [15] [34].

Interactions

#
  • When the monster a bomb is stuck to dies or is otherwise gone, the bomb stops following it [35].
  • Another explosion knocks a stuck bomb loose and lights it, to go off 4–8 steps later [36].
  • A sticky bomb thrown into a Damsel latches onto her as onto a monster [37].

Tips

#
  • A sticky bomb thrown at a wall or ceiling stays where it stuck, so a bomb can be left exactly where a block should be broken.
  • A sticky bomb thrown at a wall beside the player doesn't bounce away from him, so he has to get clear himself.
  • Once stuck, a bomb goes wherever its monster goes, toward the player too.

Trivia

#
  • The item has three names: its type is "Paste", shops sell it as "BOMB PASTE", and its pickup message says "YOU GOT STICKY BOMBS!" [38] [39].
  • The code that latches a bomb has a commented-out rule that would let a monster carry only one sticky bomb at a time [40].

FAQ

#
What does Paste do in Spelunky Classic?

It makes the player's Bombs sticky for the rest of the game. A sticky bomb stops dead against the first wall, floor or ceiling it touches, and one thrown into a monster sticks to it and rides along until it goes off.

How much does Paste cost in Spelunky Classic?

$3,000 on level 2, the first with shops, and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $6,900 on level 15. Bomb Shops sell it.

Where do you find Paste in Spelunky Classic?

In Bomb Shops, and as the Dice House's prize. Every Giant Spider leaves one when it dies, and free ones come out of Crates (a 1 in 60 roll, once the rolls before it fail), out of blocks that hide them, and as Kali's first gift.

What are sticky bombs in Spelunky Classic?

Bombs the player throws or takes out while wearing Paste. The pickup message calls it "STICKY BOMBS", and the bomb icon at the top of the screen changes to show it.
