Bomb Box

For the bag of three, see Bomb Bag.

The Bomb Box is an item in Spelunky Classic that adds 12 to the player's count when he takes it; shops sell it from $10,000.

Like a Bomb Bag, it isn't kept: taking one adds its 12 bombs to the count at the top of the screen, and the box is gone (Bombs and ropes has how the count works). The Bomb Shop, the Weapon Shop and the Rare Shop sell it, the Dice House puts it up as a prize, and Crates, blocks and Kali give it away.

Bombs and ropes picked up. The player walks over a bomb bag, a rope pile and a bomb box, and his counts at the top of the screen go from 4 bombs and 4 ropes to 19 and 7. He throws a bomb ahead, walks back and throws a rope up, and each takes one from its count.

A free Bomb Box is taken as soon as the player touches it, unless he's dead or stunned or the box is inside a block: his bombs go up by 12, a flashing "+BOMB" rises from where the box was, and the message "YOU GOT 12 MORE BOMBS!" shows [1]. Paying for one, or carrying one out of its shop, does the same [3]. A count above 99 is cut back to 99 at the start of his next step [4]. In the clip, the player walks over a Bomb Bag, a Rope Pile and a Bomb Box, and his bombs go from 7 to 19 at the box [5].

One for sale is picked up as any ware is, and stays in the player's hands until he pays: the Shopkeeper names it "A BOX OF 12 BOMBS" and its price [6] [7].

Obtaining

SourceChance
Bomb Shop1 in 5 for each ware, or 1 in 4 once the level has a Paste[8]
Weapon Shop1 in 6 for each try, once the rolls for a Web Cannon (1 in 12) and a Shotgun (1 in 10) fail[9]
Rare Shop1 in 20 on a ware's first try, 1 in 19 on its second, and so on[10]
The Dice House's prizeOnce every other roll, from a Jetpack's 1 in 40 to a Machete's 1 in 8, fails[11]
A Crate1 in 40, once the rolls before it, from a Jetpack's 1 in 500 to a Machete's 1 in 60, fail[12]
Buried in a block1 in 19 of the items buried in blocks[13]
Kali's first giftWhen the player has a Jetpack and every other piece of equipment she gives[14]

Each shop adds 10% of the base price for each level past the second [15]. Shops are made from level 2 on [16], and level 16, Olmec's Lair, has none:

Rolling a seven at the Dice House. The player bets again and throws the dice, which come up 5 and 2. On the seven, the prize in its case of ice blocks, a pair of spike shoes, pops out of it in a puff of smoke, free, and a bomb box takes its place in the case. He picks the shoes up and they go on.

A Dice House's prize is rolled from its own set of rare items, and a roll of seven gives it away, free, and puts up another in its place [17]. In the clip, a seven gives the player the case's Spike Shoes, and a Bomb Box takes their place in the case [18]. Every block of rock away from the level's edges that isn't gold and holds no gem has a 1 in 1200 chance of hiding an item, one of nineteen at random [19] [13]. Kali's first gift, at a favour of 8 at one of her altars, is one of eight pieces of equipment the player hasn't got, the Cape only if he hasn't a Jetpack either; when he has them all, it's a Jetpack, or, if he has one, a Bomb Box [20]. In custom levels, it's the level editor's tile : [21].

Carrying one out of a shop without paying adds its bombs and angers the Shopkeeper, as with any ware (General Store) [22].

Interactions

#
  • Blocks. A Bomb Box buried in a block isn't taken until the block is broken, when the player can walk onto it [23].
  • Bombs. An explosion throws a Bomb Box aside, as it does most items, and knocks one out of the player's hands; the box's bombs don't go off [24].

Tips

#
  • A Bomb Box and four Bomb Bags hold the same bombs for the same price, on any level.
  • Near the cap, a box adds what it can: at 90 bombs, one takes the count to 99, and three of its bombs are lost.

Trivia

#
  • Unlike the Bomb Bag, the Bomb Box is heavy, as a Crate or a Jetpack is, so the player holds one for sale higher than he holds a bag [25] [26].

FAQ

#
How many bombs are in a Bomb Box in Spelunky Classic?

12, four times a Bomb Bag's. The pickup message says "YOU GOT 12 MORE BOMBS!", and the count can't go past 99.

How much does a Bomb Box cost in Spelunky Classic?

$10,000 on level 2, the first with shops, and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $23,000 on level 15. Bomb Shops, Weapon Shops and Rare Shops sell it.

Where do you find a Bomb Box in Spelunky Classic?

In shops, and as the Dice House's prize when every other roll fails. Free ones come out of Crates (a 1 in 40 roll, once the rolls before it fail) and out of blocks that hide them, and Kali gives one as her first gift to a player who has everything else she gives.

Is a Bomb Box worth more than a Bomb Bag in Spelunky Classic?

Not bomb for bomb. It holds four times the bombs for four times the price: $10,000 for 12, where a Bomb Bag is $2,500 for 3, so each bomb costs the same.
