The Rare Shop is a shop in Spelunky Classic that sells eleven pieces of equipment, the Jetpack and the Teleporter among them, and Bomb Boxes.
Its Shopkeeper welcomes the player with "WELCOME TO HAMISH'S SPECIALTY SHOP!", his name one of 32 drawn at random [6] [7]. It sells the widest range of any shop: eleven pieces of equipment, the only shop with the Jetpack and the Teleporter, and Bomb Boxes. Like every shop it's a side room off the way through a level, with four wares on its floor and the Shopkeeper beside them.
Stock
#The shop has four wares, and each is rolled on its own [8] [9]. Each try first rolls for a Bomb Box, 1 in 20; failing that, it picks one of the eleven pieces of equipment, each as likely, and takes it if the level hasn't got one. A try that picks a piece the level has makes the next try's Bomb Box roll likelier, 1 in 19, then 1 in 18 and so on, so by the twentieth try a Bomb Box is certain [10]:
| Ware | Roll | |
|---|---|---|
| Bomb Box | 1 in 20 on the first try, 1 in 19 on the second... | [11] |
| Spring Shoes | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [12] |
| Compass | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [13] |
| Mattock | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [14] |
| Spectacles | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [15] |
| Jetpack | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [16] |
| Climbing Gloves | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [17] |
| Pitcher's Mitt | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [18] |
| Web Cannon | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [19] |
| Cape | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [20] |
| Teleporter | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [21] |
| Spike Shoes | Otherwise 1 in 11, if the level has none | [22] |
So a Rare Shop sells each piece once at most, and Bomb Boxes more often the more pieces the level already has. The check is for the piece on the level, not the player's, so the shop sells a piece the player already wears, and buying it again changes nothing [23]. The Mattock, the Web Cannon and the Teleporter are the player's to hold and use rather than to wear [24].
Prices
#A ware costs its base price on level 2, and 10% of that more for each level after it [25]. Each ware's own page has its price on every level:
| Ware | Level 2 | Level 5 | Level 9 | Level 13 | Level 15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web Cannon | $2,000 | $2,600 | $3,400 | $4,200 | $4,600 |
| Compass | $3,000 | $3,900 | $5,100 | $6,300 | $6,900 |
| Pitcher's Mitt | $4,000 | $5,200 | $6,800 | $8,400 | $9,200 |
| Spike Shoes | $4,000 | $5,200 | $6,800 | $8,400 | $9,200 |
| Spring Shoes | $5,000 | $6,500 | $8,500 | $10,500 | $11,500 |
| Mattock | $8,000 | $10,400 | $13,600 | $16,800 | $18,400 |
| Spectacles | $8,000 | $10,400 | $13,600 | $16,800 | $18,400 |
| Climbing Gloves | $8,000 | $10,400 | $13,600 | $16,800 | $18,400 |
| Bomb Box | $10,000 | $13,000 | $17,000 | $21,000 | $23,000 |
| Teleporter | $10,000 | $13,000 | $17,000 | $21,000 | $23,000 |
| Cape | $12,000 | $15,600 | $20,400 | $25,200 | $27,600 |
| Jetpack | $20,000 | $26,000 | $34,000 | $42,000 | $46,000 |
The Jetpack is the dearest ware an ordinary shop sells. A Black Market's Rare Shop prices its wares by the level the market is on [26].
Shopkeeper
#The Shopkeeper sells as in every shop (the General Store has the details): he names the price of a ware the player holds, and the pay key buys it [27] [28]. A piece of equipment to wear goes on as it's bought, one to use stays in the player's hands, his own, and a Bomb Box adds its bombs [29] [30]. A theft, a bomb lit in the shop or a block of its walls broken angers him, and he gives the wares away and attacks with his Shotgun [31] [32].
Stealing
#Carrying a ware out of the shop's room unpaid angers the Shopkeeper ("COME BACK HERE, THIEF!") and gives it to the player as if bought. A piece to wear goes on at once only if the player leaves the room before it, held in front of him, does; otherwise he's left holding it, free, and picking it up again puts it on [33] [34] [23]. In the clip, in a Rare Shop that opens to the left, the player picks up the Spike Shoes, priced at $5,200, and runs and jumps out with them; the Shopkeeper turns on him and fires, and the shoes, out of the shop first, stay in his hands rather than going on [35].
A theft marks the player a thief into the next level: its exit has a Shopkeeper waiting by it, and a shop's Shopkeeper doesn't greet him but walks about, ready to attack, under a Wanted poster of the player (the General Store has the rules) [36] [37] [38]. The second clip shows a Rare Shop on such a level [39]. Its wares are free, and each counts as stolen in the end-of-game statistics as it comes on screen, though the player touches none [40] [23].
Locations
#A level from 2 to 15 that rolls a shop builds one of seven kinds, each as likely, so a shop is a Rare Shop one time in seven (one in six on a Temple sacrifice pit level, which never has a Kissing Parlor) [41] [1] [42] [4]. The Mines has how levels roll shops. A Black Market has five shops that sell items, as a rule one of each kind, a Rare Shop among them (the General Store has the exception) [5] [23] [43].
Trivia
#- The source calls it the "Rare" shop, and its Shopkeeper a "SPECIALTY SHOP" [44] [6]. Its sign shows a magnifying glass.
- On level 2, the Shopkeeper calls the Jetpack "JETPACK FOR $20000."; past level 2, the message is rebuilt from the ware's type, "A JETPACK FOR ...", as for the Spectacles and the Spike Shoes [23] [45].
