Ankh Shop

The Ankh Shop is the Black Market's seventh shop in Spelunky Classic, which sells one ware, the Ankh, for $50,000 on any level.
Its Shopkeeper greets the player with "I HAVE SOMETHING SPECIAL..." and nothing more [2] [3]. The shop is a ledge at the top of one of the Black Market's rooms, with the Ankh on it beside the Shopkeeper and a lamp, and no sign; it's open only above, where two rooms drop to it [1] [4]. The source names it the "Ankh" shop [5].
Stock
#One ware: the Ankh, which the market's room code puts on its ledge itself rather than rolling it as other shops' wares are, so every Ankh Shop has one [6]. Nothing else in the game makes an Ankh (the Ankh's page has its sources). In the clip, the player drops into the shop, the Shopkeeper greets him, and he picks the Ankh up: "AN ANKH FOR $50000. PRESS P TO PURCHASE." [7]
Prices
#The Ankh costs $50,000, the price it's made with [8]. Other wares cost 10% of their base price more for each level past the second, the market's included, but that's done by the code that rolls them, which the Ankh skips, so its price is the same on levels 6, 7 and 8, wherever the market is [9].
Shopkeeper
#He sells the Ankh as any Shopkeeper sells a ware (the General Store has the rules): he names its price while it's held, and the pay key with $50,000 in hand buys it, which puts it on ("YOU GOT THE ANKH! YOU FEEL PROTECTED.") [10] [11] [12]. What angers him angers every Shopkeeper, and the market has seven close together: a bomb lit in one shop angers them all (the Black Market) [4].
Stealing
#Carried out of the shop's room unpaid, the Ankh goes on at once and the Shopkeeper attacks ("COME BACK HERE, THIEF!"); his shots can take the player's last heart, which the Ankh then gives back [13] [12]. In the clip, the player jumps up out of the shop with it, drops back in, and is shot until his hearts run out: the Ankh shatters and he's back at the level's entrance [14].
The Ankh is never marked for sale, so the check that angers the Shopkeeper when a ware itself leaves the shop passes it by. Thrown up out of the shop, it lies outside with its price and nobody minds, until the player picks it up there: then it's his, and the Shopkeeper attacks (Throwing the Ankh out) [15] [4] [16]. The theft marks the player a thief for the next level, as any does (the General Store has the rules), though no shop comes after the Black Market [4].
Locations
#Only in the Black Market, one in every market: the room in its right-hand column, third from the top [1] [17]. The market is once a game, on level 6, 7 or 8 [18].
Trivia
#- It's the only shop without a sign over it, and its greeting the only one that names no shop and no Shopkeeper [19] [20].
FAQ
#- Where do you buy the Ankh in Spelunky Classic?
In the Ankh Shop, a room on the Black Market's right-hand side, for $50,000. No other shop sells it.
- How much does the Ankh cost in Spelunky Classic?
$50,000, whatever level the Black Market is on: unlike other wares, it isn't marked up past level 2.
- Can you steal the Ankh in Spelunky Classic?
Yes. Carried out of its shop unpaid, it goes on at once, and the Shopkeeper attacks. If his shots take the player's last heart, the Ankh brings him back.
- What does the Ankh Shop's Shopkeeper say?
"I HAVE SOMETHING SPECIAL...", the only greeting that doesn't give the Shopkeeper's name or his shop's.
