# Vine

From the spelunky.ai wiki: <https://spelunky.ai/wiki/vine>.

*For the Mines' and the Temple's, see [Ladder](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ladder).*

A Vine is terrain in Spelunky Classic, a climbing plant hanging in the Jungle's rooms that the player climbs as he would a ladder, and where Monkeys wait.

Vines hang in [the Jungle](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/jungle)'s rooms, whose room script makes a vine from each tile that would be a
[Ladder](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ladder) in the Mines', and in [the Black Market](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/black-market). To the code a vine is a kind of ladder, so
everything about climbing one is the same, but its top: a ladder's top is a rung to stand on, and a vine's
isn't. [Monkeys](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/monkey) start out on them.

## How it works

**Clip: Climbing a vine.** In the Jungle's green rock, the player walks to a vine hanging past a ledge and climbs it, as he would a ladder; at its top he jumps off toward the ledge, catches its edge and pulls himself up. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/vine/climb/clip.mp4))

The player climbs a vine exactly as he does a [ladder](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ladder#how-it-works): up in front of it, standing or in
the air, takes hold, up and down climb it at 1 pixel a step, and the jump key throws him off[^1][^2]. A
fall doesn't count while he climbs[^3]. The
clip shows it in the Jungle's green rock: the player climbs a vine hanging past a ledge, jumps off toward the
ledge at its top, catches its edge and pulls himself up.

A vine's top is a kind of ladder, not of ladder top, so it's climbed like the rest of the vine and isn't a
platform: nothing stands on it[^4]. How a vine looks is set when the
level is built: its top block is drawn as the vine's source and its bottom block as its end[^5].

| --------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | ---- |
| [The Jungle](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/jungle) | Every ladder tile of its room templates is a vine | [^4] |
| [The Black Market](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/black-market) | Its ordinary ladder tiles; it has ladders of its own too | [^6] |

The [Sun Room](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/sun-room) has vines the room editor placed[^7]. In custom levels they're the
[level editor](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/level-editor)'s tiles `v` (a vine) and `t` (a vine top)[^8].

## Interactions

- **[Monkeys](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/monkey).** Level generation puts a Monkey on each block of vine with a 1 in 15 chance[^9]. It climbs up and down its vine, turning where the vine ends,
and leaps off at a player below it[^10].
- **[Bombs](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb)** don't destroy vines, which aren't solid, as they don't destroy ladders[^11].

## Tips

- A vine is safe to climb down however long it is, as a ladder is: a fall doesn't count while the player
  climbs.
- With no top to stand on, a vine that ends below a ledge is left by jumping off toward the ledge, as the clip
  does.

## FAQ

### How do you climb vines in Spelunky Classic?

As a ladder: by pressing up in front of one, standing or in the air, near its middle. Up and down then climb it, and the jump key jumps off.

### Why are there Monkeys on vines in Spelunky Classic?

Level generation puts a [Monkey](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/monkey) on a block of vine with a 1 in 15 chance. It climbs up and down the vine until the player comes near below it, then leaps at him.

### Can you stand on top of a vine in Spelunky Classic?

No. A ladder's top is a rung to stand on, but a vine's top is only more vine: the player climbs it, or falls past it.
