This page describes a secret.

The Udjat Eye is an equipment item in Spelunky Classic, kept in a locked chest, that shows buried treasure and beeps near the Black Market's hidden entrance.

| Object | `oUdjatEye` |
| Found in | The Mines (In a locked chest on level 2, 3 or 4)[^2] |

Wearing it, the player sees the gems and gold buried in blocks, and on the right Jungle level
it tells him he's near the Black Market's entrance, hidden in a block, by beeping faster as
he closes in. It comes from a locked chest on one of the Mines' levels 2 to 4, opened with a key
the same level hides. It's worn from the moment it's picked up until the game ends.

## Effect

**Clip: Locked chest.** The player carries a key down to a locked chest. The key opens it, and the Udjat Eye pops out; he picks it up and puts it on, and a big sapphire and a big ruby buried in the rock to his right show through it. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/a05103153f8d82b4/clips/udjat-eye/chest/clip.mp4))

Picking it up puts it on: the message "YOU GOT THE UDJAT EYE! YOU FEEL AWAKENED." shows, the Eye disappears,
and an icon of it joins the row under the hearts[^3][^4]. It stays on until a new game starts, which clears it[^5][^6].

### Buried treasure

Every treasure on the screen is drawn at depth 0 rather than 101 while the player wears it, which puts it in
front of the blocks, so gems and gold buried inside blocks show through them[^7]. Items stay hidden: unlike the [Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles),
the Eye doesn't change how they're drawn[^8]. In the clip, on the step
the player picks the Eye up, a big sapphire and a big ruby buried in the rock to his right appear[^9].

### The Black Market

One of the Jungle's levels 5 to 7 hides the entrance to the Black Market: level 5 one time in 3, level 6 one
time in 2, and otherwise level 7, once a game[^10]. It's a door
set inside a block, which has to be dug or bombed out to reach it[^11][^12]. On that
level, the Eye blinks and beeps. Its next blink comes after as many steps as the player is pixels from the
entrance, and no fewer than 4, and sooner if he gets closer in the meantime; each blink switches its icon
and plays one of two sounds in turn[^1][^13]. The timer runs whether or not the player wears the Eye: in a replay
of a level 5 with the entrance, a blink with the player about 116 pixels away sets the next for 115 steps
later, which comes after 107 as he walks closer, and beside the entrance it blinks every 4 steps[^14]. It's only set again while the entrance is active,
which, like most of a level, it isn't once it's far outside the view, so far from it the Eye falls silent
after its next blink[^15]. On a level without the entrance, the Eye is silent. Walking
into the entrance takes the player to the Black Market as the next level[^16].

## Obtaining

| Source | Chance | |
| -------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---- |
| A locked chest | Made on level 2 one time in 3, on level 3 one time in 2, and otherwise on level 4 | [^2] |

On the level that makes it, the chest goes in a nook in the rock, rolled for each nook as the level fills
them, or, failing that, beside the exit[^17][^18]. One of the level's treasures not inside a block becomes its
key, picked at random[^19]. Once the key is made, no later level
makes another chest, opened or not[^20]. The chest opens only to the
key held by the player and touching it: the key is used up, and the Eye pops out with a puff of smoke[^21]. Picking it up then puts it on. The first clip
shows a key carried down to its chest[^9].

The key can be anywhere in the level, and sometimes in a pocket of rock that nothing leads into, the chest
too, which only bombs open[^22]. In the second clip, two bombs have opened such a pocket; an
[Arrow Trap](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/arrow-trap) fires as the player drops in, and he crawls the key under low rock to the chest[^23].

**Clip: Key sealed in rock.** Bombs have opened a pocket of rock holding a locked chest and its key. An arrow trap fires over the player as he drops in; he picks up the key, crawls under the low rock to the chest, opens it and puts on the Udjat Eye. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/a05103153f8d82b4/clips/udjat-eye/sealed-key/clip.mp4))

No shop sells the Eye, no Crate or block holds one, and the level editor has no tile for it.

## Interactions

- The [Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles) put treasure in front of the blocks the same way, and buried items too[^24].
- The Black Market sells the [Ankh](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ankh), so the Eye is the first step toward it[^25].

## Tips

- The beeping only starts on the level with the entrance, so a beep on a Jungle level is the sign that the
Black Market is on it; the faster it comes, the nearer the hidden door.
- The chest's key is always one of the level's loose treasures, so a level with a chest is worth searching
for a key lying where a gem or gold would be.

## Trivia

- Its `type` is "Udjat Eye", its price $0, and its shop message "I SHOULDN'T BE SELLING THIS!"; no shop
  stocks it[^26][^22].
- The blinking runs on every level with the Black Market's entrance, worn Eye or not; without the Eye there's
just no icon to switch and no sound[^13][^4].

## FAQ

### What does the Udjat Eye do in Spelunky Classic?

Two things. It makes treasure buried in blocks show through them, and on a level with the Black Market's hidden entrance it blinks and beeps, faster the nearer the player is to the entrance.

### How do you get the Udjat Eye in Spelunky Classic?

By opening the locked chest that one of the Mines' levels 2 to 4 has, with the key the same level hides in place of one of its treasures. The player carries the key to the chest, and the Eye pops out.

### Is the Udjat Eye needed to enter the Black Market in Spelunky Classic?

No. The Black Market's entrance is there whether or not the player has it; the Udjat Eye only helps find it, by beeping faster as the player gets closer.

### Do the Udjat Eye and the Spectacles do the same thing in Spelunky Classic?

Partly. Both make buried treasure show through blocks, but only the [Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles) show buried items too, and only the Udjat Eye finds the Black Market's entrance.
