# Tiki Torch

From the spelunky.ai wiki: <https://spelunky.ai/wiki/tiki-torch>.

*For the light the player can carry, see [Lamp](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/lamp).*

A Tiki Torch is terrain in Spelunky Classic, a burning torch on the ground of a dark Jungle level that lights a small circle of the cave around it.

Tiki torches are only made on [dark levels](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/dark-level) of [the Jungle](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/jungle), where they stand on the
ground and burn, one of the level's few lights besides the player's own. A torch can't be carried or moved,
and it goes with the block it stands on.

## How it works

**Clip: Tiki torches on a dark level.** On a dark level of the Jungle, the cave is black but for the circle of light around the player and smaller ones around what glows; at the right, a tiki torch stands on the ground, flickering in a circle of its own. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/tiki-torch/dark/clip.mp4))

A tiki torch flickers through its flames, half a frame a step[^2]. On a
dark level, it lights a circle of the cave 32 pixels around its middle, as a lit trap or a
[Fire Frog](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/fire-frog) does, where a [Flare](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/flare) or a [Lamp](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/lamp) lights 96[^3]. It also widens the player's own light as he nears it,
counting as a light 48 pixels farther away than it is[^4]
([Dark level](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/dark-level#the-darkness)). The clip shows a dark Jungle level: the cave is black but for the circle around the
player and the smaller ones around what glows, and at the right a tiki torch flickers in a circle of its own[^5].

A torch isn't solid, isn't an item and can't be picked up. When the block under it is destroyed, it's destroyed
too[^6].

## Locations

As a dark Jungle level is made, each block of the ground that a [Spear Trap](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spear-trap) could replace (open
above, open on a side, a block under it, away from shops and the entrance) gets a tiki torch standing on it
with a 1 in 20 chance, unless there's water above it; only if it doesn't, it rolls for the trap[^7]. A trunk block of a [Tree](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/tree) never gets one. The
[level editor](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/level-editor) has no tile for it.

## Tips

- Its light is small: a Flare thrown ahead lights three times as far.
- A Bomb at a torch's foot puts its light out for good, with the block it stands on.

## FAQ

### What do tiki torches do in Spelunky Classic?

They light the dark. On a [dark level](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/dark-level) of the Jungle, each lights a circle 32 pixels around it, and the player's own light widens as he nears one.

### Can you pick up a tiki torch in Spelunky Classic?

No. A tiki torch is part of the level, not an item. For a light to carry, the player has [Flares](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/flare), or a [Lamp](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/lamp) brought down from a ceiling.

### How do you get rid of a tiki torch in Spelunky Classic?

By breaking the block it stands on, with a [Bomb](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb) or a [Mattock](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/mattock): the torch goes with it.
