# Thin Ice

From the spelunky.ai wiki: <https://spelunky.ai/wiki/thin-ice>.

*For the Ice Caves' slippery blocks, see [Ice](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ice).*

Thin Ice is terrain in Spelunky Classic, a slab of ice in the Ice Caves that wears away under a player standing on it and gives way after 1 second.

Thin ice is a slab that's solid until the player has stood on it for a second. It isn't slippery, as
[Ice](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ice) is; it melts. As it thins, it's drawn thinner, so how far gone a slab is shows, and once it's gone
it's gone for good.

## How it works

**Clip: Thin ice giving way.** Revived by the Ankh inside the Moai, the player stands on the thin ice in the statue's chest; it wears thinner under him and gives way, dropping him to the Hedjet and the exit below. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/thin-ice/melt/clip.mp4))

A slab of thin ice starts 60 thick[^2].
Each step the player touches its top, it loses 2, and drips water now and then,
a 1 in 100 chance a step; its picture gets thinner with every 10 lost, in six stages, and at 0 it's gone[^1]. Standing still or walking on it, that's 30 steps, 1 second. It
never thickens again.

The clip shows the [Moai](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/moai)'s: the [Ankh](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ankh) has revived the player inside it, standing on the thin
ice in the statue's chest, which wears thinner under him for 30 steps and gives way, dropping him to the
[Hedjet](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/hedjet) and the exit below[^3].

Only the player wears it: monsters, items and the [Damsel](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/damsel) can stand on it for good. The
[Yeti King](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/yeti-king) is the exception: each step of his roar takes 2 from
every slab of thin ice on the level[^4].

## Interactions

- **[Bombs](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb) and the [Mattock](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/mattock)** break it as any block.
- **The [Moai](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/moai).** Its slab is the floor of the chamber the Ankh revives the player in, so it gives way
under him a second after he's back, and drops him to the Hedjet.

## Tips

- Thin ice is a floor for a second: a slab to cross, not to wait on. Its picture shows how much is left.
- Its wear adds up: a slab the player stood on for half a second earlier gives way after half a second the next
  time.

## FAQ

### How long can you stand on thin ice in Spelunky Classic?

1 second, 30 steps: it starts 60 thick and loses 2 each step the player stands on it. It doesn't recover, so the time adds up over every visit.

### Does thin ice break under monsters in Spelunky Classic?

No. Only the player standing on it wears it away. The [Yeti King](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/yeti-king)'s roar wears it too, from anywhere on the level.

### Where is thin ice in Spelunky Classic?

In [the Ice Caves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ice-caves)' rooms and [Yeti lairs](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/yeti-lair), and inside the [Moai](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/moai), where it holds the player above the [Hedjet](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/hedjet).
