# Teleporter

From the spelunky.ai wiki: <https://spelunky.ai/wiki/teleporter>. Verified against the spelunky.ai port [v0.1.10](https://github.com/851-labs/spelunky/releases/tag/v0.1.10) on 27 October 2026.

The Teleporter is an item in Spelunky Classic that moves the player 4 to 8 blocks ahead or up, destroying any monster he lands in; shops sell it from $10,000.

Held, it moves the player a random 4 to 8 blocks the way he faces, or up with the up key, through anything
in between. Where that's inside rock, it looks a few blocks higher, and if it finds no room there, the
player is crushed. A monster where he lands is destroyed outright. It has no wait between uses.
Rare Shops and the Dice House sell it, and [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate) and buried blocks
give it away.

## Usage

**Clip: Teleporter landing on a snake.** The player picks up a teleporter and uses it facing a snake. He reappears five blocks ahead, where the snake was, and the snake is destroyed in a spray of blood. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/66c8732d531340f4/clips/teleporter/snake/clip.mp4))

The Teleporter is picked up like any item, crouching over it and pressing the attack key. While it's held,
the attack key uses it, on the ground or in the air; crouching, the key puts it down in front of the player
instead[^3]. It isn't thrown. Each use:

1. **Picks the spot**: 64–128 pixels (16 pixels times a whole number from 4 to 8) the
way the player faces, or that far above him with up held, no closer to the room's sides than 8 pixels and
no higher than its top row[^4].
2. **Looks for room**: while the spot is inside a block, it moves up a block, at most three
   times[^5].
3. **Moves him there**, with three sparks where he was, and Kali's [ball and chain](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ball-and-chain) with
him if he has them; he's left falling[^6][^7].
4. **Destroys a monster** that's where he lands: it loses 99 hit points, bleeds, and is
   gone[^8].

In the clip, the player uses it facing a [Snake](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/snake) five blocks away; he reappears where it was, and
the Snake bursts into blood and is gone. The game's tally of Snakes killed doesn't
change[^9].

With down held and the player not crouching, the key does nothing[^10].
The Teleporter sets no wait of its own between uses, but a sideways use only picks a new spot once the wait
another weapon's shot starts has run out; inside it, the player is moved to the spot its last use
picked[^11], or to where he last stood holding a ware he hadn't paid
for, a readied bomb arrow or pressing the pay key, as the game's check for a shop writes the same
spot[^12][^13]. If none of these has set it on the level, the game
stops with an error[^14][^15].

The Teleporter goes with the player through a level's exit if he's holding it, and is in his hands on the
next level[^16][^17].
He drops it when he's stunned, or when he teeters too long at a ledge's
edge[^18][^19].

## Damage

| What | What happens | |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------------------------- | ----- |
| A monster where the player lands | Destroyed outright, whatever its health | [^8] |
| The player, landing inside rock | Crushed: 99 hearts, so he dies | [^20] |

**Clip: Teleporter into rock.** In a shop, the player uses a teleporter facing left. It puts him five blocks away inside solid rock, three blocks up from where it first tried, and he dies at once. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/66c8732d531340f4/clips/teleporter/rock/clip.mp4))

The spot is picked only by distance, and it looks for room by moving up three blocks at most, so the player
can land inside rock. In the second clip, used facing left in a shop, it puts him five blocks away, inside
the rock three blocks up from where it first tried, and he dies on the spot with all four
hearts[^21][^22].

| Buried in a block | 1 in 19 of the items buried in blocks | [^26] |

A Rare Shop stocks one only if the level hasn't got one
already[^27], and it adds 10% of the base price for each level past
the second[^28]. Shops are made from level 2
on[^29], and level 16, Olmec's Lair, has none:

| Area | 1st level | 2nd level | 3rd level | 4th level |
| ------------- | --------- | --------- | --------- | --------- |
| The Mines | — | $10,000 | $11,000 | $12,000 |
| The Jungle | $13,000 | $14,000 | $15,000 | $16,000 |
| The Ice Caves | $17,000 | $18,000 | $19,000 | $20,000 |
| The Temple | $21,000 | $22,000 | $23,000 | — |

The Dice House puts its prize up from the same set of rare items, and a roll of seven gives it
away[^30][^31]. Every
block of rock away from the level's edges that isn't gold and holds no gem has a 1 in 1200 chance of hiding
an item, one of nineteen at random[^32][^26]. In custom levels, it's the level
editor's tile `?`[^33].

Paying for one, or carrying one out of a shop without paying, which angers the
Shopkeeper, shows "YOU GOT A TELEPORTER!", and it stays in the player's
hands[^34][^15].

## Interactions

- **Sealed places.** It goes through walls, so it can put the player inside places nothing else opens,
  the Moai's chamber among them[^15].
- **The [ball and chain](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ball-and-chain).** Kali's ball and chain come with the player wherever it takes
  him[^35].

## Tips

- It looks no more than three blocks up for room, so beside thick rock it's safer used along an open
passage, where the spot it picks is likely to be open.
- It destroys a monster outright, a [Megamouth](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/megamouth)'s 40 hit points or a [Yeti King](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/yeti-king)'s 30
  alike.

## Trivia

- Before it moves the player, it puts him no higher than 8 pixels from the room's top, a line that changes
nothing, as the next ones move him anyway[^36][^15].
- A commented-out `// state = STANDING;` sits a few lines above the one that leaves him
  falling[^37].

## FAQ

### How far does the Teleporter go in Spelunky Classic?

64–128 pixels, 4 to 8 blocks at random, ahead of the player or, with up held, above him. If that's inside rock, it tries up to three blocks higher.

### Can the Teleporter kill you in Spelunky Classic?

Yes. If the spot it picks is still inside rock after trying three blocks higher, it puts the player there anyway, and he's crushed and dies at once, whatever his health.

### Does the Teleporter kill monsters in Spelunky Classic?

Yes. A monster where the player lands is destroyed on the spot, whatever its health.

### Where do you find the Teleporter in Spelunky Classic?

In Rare Shops and as the Dice House's prize. Free ones come out of [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate) (a 1 in 100 roll, once the rolls before it fail) and out of blocks that hide them.
