# Spring Shoes

Spring Shoes are an equipment item in Spelunky Classic that make the player's jumps from the ground higher; shops sell them from $5,000.

Wearing them, the player jumps from the ground half as hard again, which takes him nearly three blocks up
instead of under two: high enough to catch a ledge that's out of reach without them. Only jumps from the
ground get the boost. Clothing Shops, Rare Shops and the
Dice House offer them, and [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate), blocks and Kali give them away. They're worn from
the moment they're picked up or paid for until the game ends.

## Effect

**Clip: Spring Shoes jump.** The player jumps at a ledge three blocks up and falls well short. He picks up spring shoes, jumps again, catches the ledge's edge, and climbs up to the gold bar on it, then jumps on the spot, nearly three blocks high, and lands unhurt. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/66c8732d531340f4/clips/spring-shoes/jump/clip.mp4))

Picking up a free pair, paying for one or carrying one out of a shop puts it on: the message "YOU GOT SPRING
SHOES! YOU FEEL BOUNCY." shows, the pair disappears, and an icon of it joins the row under the hearts[^3][^4]. They stay on
until a new game starts, which clears them[^5][^6].

A jump from the ground starts with an upward push of 4 (twice the jump's base push of 2), and the shoes make
it 1.5 times that, 6[^7][^8], which is also the most the push can be[^9]. Held for its full length, a jump without them rises
about 26 pixels; with them, about 46, nearly three blocks. The clip shows the difference: the player jumps at
a ledge three blocks up and falls well short of it, then, in the shoes, catches its edge, climbs onto it, and
jumps on the spot nearly three blocks high[^10].

The higher jump doesn't hurt when he lands. A full jump with the shoes falls for 10 steps back to the ground
it left, and a fall costs hearts only after more than 16 steps[^11][^10].

| Kali's first gift | 1 in 8, or the next of the eight the player hasn't got | [^17] |

A shop stocks a pair only if the level hasn't got one already, even for a player who wears a pair[^18][^19], and it adds 10% of the base price for
each level past the second[^20]. Shops are made from level 2 on[^21], and level 16, Olmec's Lair, has none:

| Area | 1st level | 2nd level | 3rd level | 4th level |
| ------------- | --------- | --------- | --------- | --------- |
| The Mines | — | $5,000 | $5,500 | $6,000 |
| The Jungle | $6,500 | $7,000 | $7,500 | $8,000 |
| The Ice Caves | $8,500 | $9,000 | $9,500 | $10,000 |
| The Temple | $10,500 | $11,000 | $11,500 | — |

The Dice House puts its prize up from the same set of rare items, and a roll of seven gives it away and
puts up another[^22][^23].
Every block of rock away from the level's edges that isn't gold and holds no gem has a 1 in 1200 chance of
hiding an item, one of nineteen at random[^24][^16]. Kali's first gift, when the player's favour with her
reaches 8 at one of her altars, is one of eight pieces of equipment the player hasn't got, the Spring Shoes
among them[^25]. In custom levels, they're the
level editor's tile `~`[^26].

Carrying a pair out of a shop without paying puts it on and angers the Shopkeeper, as with
any ware; whether it goes on at once depends on whether the player or the pair leaves the shop first[^19][^27].

## Interactions

- Jumps that don't start on the ground get no boost: out of a web, out of water, or up from a wall or ledge
the player is hanging on[^28][^29]. So [Climbing Gloves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/climbing-gloves) climb no
  faster with them.

## Tips

- A ledge three blocks up, out of reach of an ordinary jump, can be caught and climbed with them.
- Jumping on flat ground in them is safe: the fall back takes too few steps to hurt.

## Trivia

- Shops call them "SPRINGY SHOES"[^30].
- The jump code checks first for a pair of Jordans, which would treble the push and lower the gravity, and
the pickup code has their message, "YOU GOT JORDANS!"[^31][^32].
Nothing in the game makes or places Jordans: no level, shop, crate or level editor tile has them[^19].

## FAQ

### What do the Spring Shoes do in Spelunky Classic?

They make every jump from the ground start 1.5 times as strong, so a full jump rises about 46 pixels, nearly three blocks, instead of about 26.

### How high can you jump with the Spring Shoes in Spelunky Classic?

Nearly three blocks: about 46 pixels at full height, against about 26 without them. That's enough to catch the edge of a ledge three blocks up and climb onto it.

### How much do the Spring Shoes cost in Spelunky Classic?

$5,000 on level 2, the first with shops, and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $11,500 on level 15.

### Do the Spring Shoes cause fall damage in Spelunky Classic?

No. A full jump with them falls for 10 steps back to the ground it left, and a fall hurts only after more than 16.
