# Spectacles

From the spelunky.ai wiki: <https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles>. Verified against the spelunky.ai port [v0.1.10](https://github.com/851-labs/spelunky/releases/tag/v0.1.10) on 27 October 2026.

Spectacles are an equipment item in Spelunky Classic that make items and treasure buried inside blocks visible; shops sell them from $8,000.

Wearing them, the player sees through blocks to what's buried in them: the gems and items that level
generation hides inside some blocks show in front of the blocks instead of behind them. Clothing
Shops and Rare Shops sell them, and Crates, buried blocks and Kali give them away.
They're worn from the moment they're picked up or paid for until the game ends.

## Effect

**Clip: Spectacles reveal buried treasure.** The player picks up a pair of spectacles in a cave of bricks. At once climbing gloves and four big gems buried in the bricks around him show through them. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/66c8732d531340f4/clips/spectacles/reveal/clip.mp4))

Picking up a free pair, paying for one or carrying one out of a shop puts it on: the message "YOU GOT
SPECTACLES! YOUR EYESIGHT SEEMS IMPROVED..." shows, the pair disappears, and an icon of it joins the row under
the hearts[^3][^4].
They stay on until a new game starts, which clears them[^5][^6].

What they change is the order things are drawn in. Every item is drawn at depth 51 rather than 101, set
when it's made and again on each step it's on screen, and every treasure on screen at 0 rather than 101,
which puts both in front of the blocks[^7][^8][^9]. The
Dice House's dice are drawn in front too[^10]. So
treasure and items buried inside blocks, which are otherwise hidden behind them, show through. The clip
shows a pair picked up in a cave of bricks: on that step, a pair of [Climbing Gloves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/climbing-gloves) and
four big gems in the bricks around the player appear[^11]. A thing off the
screen changes when it comes into view, as items and treasure only act on screen[^12].

| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ----- |
| Clothing Shop | Each of its wares is one of its six items or a Rope Pile | [^13] |
| Rare Shop | Each of its wares is one of its eleven items or a Bomb Box | [^14] |
| A Crate | 1 in 90, if the rolls before it, from a [Jetpack](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/jetpack)'s 1 in 500 to the Climbing Gloves' 1 in 90, fail | [^15] |
| Buried in a block | 1 in 19 of the items buried in blocks | [^16] |
| Kali's first gift | 1 in 8, or the next of the eight the player hasn't got | [^17] |

A shop stocks a pair only if the level hasn't got one already, even for a player who wears a pair[^18][^19], and it adds 10% of the base price for each level past the second[^20]. Shops are made from level 2 on[^21], and level 16, Olmec's Lair, has none:

| Area | 1st level | 2nd level | 3rd level | 4th level |
| ------------- | --------- | --------- | --------- | --------- |
| The Mines | — | $8,000 | $8,800 | $9,600 |
| The Jungle | $10,400 | $11,200 | $12,000 | $12,800 |
| The Ice Caves | $13,600 | $14,400 | $15,200 | $16,000 |
| The Temple | $16,800 | $17,600 | $18,400 | — |

Every block of rock away from the level's edges that isn't gold and holds no gem has a 1 in 1200 chance of
hiding an item, one of nineteen at random[^22][^16]; ice hides none, its roll being commented out[^23]. Kali's
first gift, when the player's favour with her reaches 8 at one of her altars, is one of eight pieces of
equipment the player hasn't got, the Spectacles among them[^24].
In custom levels, they're the level editor's tile `%`[^25].

Carrying a pair out of a shop without paying puts it on and angers the Shopkeeper, as with
any ware; whether it goes on at once depends on whether the player or the pair leaves the shop first[^19][^26].

## Interactions

- Seeing a buried item doesn't free it: the player can't pick up an item whose position is inside a block[^27]. A Bomb or a [Mattock](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/mattock) digs it out.
- The [Udjat Eye](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/udjat-eye) puts treasure in front of the blocks too, but not items[^28].
- A shop can stock a pair the player is already wearing, as it only checks the level for one; buying it
  again changes nothing[^18][^29][^19].

## Tips

- Gems and items buried in a block show only while the Spectacles are on, so they show where a Bomb is worth
  using.
- Kali never gives a second pair: her gift skips the equipment the player already has.

## Trivia

- On level 2, a shop calls them "SPECTACLES FOR $8000."[^30]
Past level 2, the message is rebuilt with the new price from the item's name[^31], and as the Spectacles have no shop name of their own it
reads "A SPECTACLES FOR $8800." on level 3[^19], and "A SPECTACLES FOR $10400." on level 5[^26].

## FAQ

### What do the Spectacles do in Spelunky Classic?

They make every item and treasure on screen show in front of the blocks, so gems and items buried inside blocks can be seen. They change nothing else, and the player keeps them for the rest of the game.

### How much do Spectacles cost in Spelunky Classic?

$8,000 on level 2, the first with shops, and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $18,400 on level 15. Clothing Shops and Rare Shops sell them.

### Where do you find Spectacles in Spelunky Classic?

In Clothing Shops and Rare Shops. Free ones come out of Crates (a 1 in 90 roll, once the rolls before it fail), out of blocks that hide them, and as Kali's first gift.

### Do the Spectacles and the Udjat Eye do the same thing in Spelunky Classic?

Partly. Both make buried treasure show through blocks, but only the Spectacles show buried items too; the [Udjat Eye](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/udjat-eye) has other uses of its own.
