Like a [Bomb Bag](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb-bag), it isn't kept: taking one adds its 3
[ropes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/rope) to the count beside the rope icon at the top of the screen, and the pile is gone
([Bombs and ropes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bombs-and-ropes) has how the count works). The [General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store) and the
[Clothing Shop](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/clothing-shop) sell it, and [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate), blocks and the [Yeti King](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/yeti-king) give it
away.

## Effect

**Clip: Bombs and ropes picked up.** The player walks over a bomb bag, a rope pile and a bomb box, and his counts at the top of the screen go from 4 bombs and 4 ropes to 19 and 7. He throws a bomb ahead, walks back and throws a rope up, and each takes one from its count. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/bombs-and-ropes/pickups/clip.mp4))

A free Rope Pile is taken as soon as the player touches it, unless he's dead or stunned or the pile is
inside a block: his ropes go up by 3, a flashing "+ROPE" rises from where the
pile was, and the message "YOU GOT 3 MORE ROPES!" shows[^1].
Paying for one, or carrying one out of its shop, does the same[^3].
A count above 99 is cut back to 99 at the start of his next
step[^4]. In the clip, the player walks over a Bomb Bag, a Rope
Pile and a [Bomb Box](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb-box), and his ropes go from 4 to 7 at the pile[^5].

One for sale is picked up as any ware is, and stays in the player's hands until he pays: the
[Shopkeeper](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/shopkeeper) names its price[^6][^7].

Each shop adds 10% of the base price for each level past the second[^13]. Shops are made from level 2 on[^14], and level 16, [Olmec's Lair](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmecs-lair), has none:

| Area | 1st level | 2nd level | 3rd level | 4th level |

**Clip: Crate opened into ropes.** The player walks onto a crate and opens it. It holds a pile of rope, which appears under him and is collected at once: his ropes go from 4 to 7. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/crate/rope/clip.mp4))

A Crate's item appears where the player stands as he opens it, so a Rope Pile out of one is taken at once:
in the clip, a Crate gives him 3 more ropes on the step he opens it[^15][^16]. Every block of rock away from
the level's edges that isn't gold and holds no gem has a 1 in 1200 chance of hiding an item, one of
nineteen at random[^17][^11].
In custom levels, it's the [level editor](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/level-editor)'s tile `R`[^18].

**Clip: Yeti King bombed.** The player drops a bomb at the Yeti King's feet while it yells, and runs. The explosion kills it, and it bursts into bones, Big Sapphires and a rope pile. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/yeti-king/bomb/clip.mp4))

A Yeti King that dies leaves four items, each Spike Shoes one time in twelve, and otherwise a
[Big Sapphire](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/big-sapphire) or a Rope Pile at even odds, thrown up and out from where it fell[^12]. In the clip, a bomb kills one, and it bursts into bones, Big
Sapphires and a Rope Pile[^19].

Carrying one out of a shop without paying adds its ropes and angers the Shopkeeper, as with any ware
([General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store#stealing))[^20].

## Interactions

- **Blocks.** A Rope Pile buried in a block isn't taken until the block is broken[^21].
- **[Bombs](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb).** An explosion throws a Rope Pile aside, as it does most items, and knocks one out of the
  player's hands[^22].

## Tips

- Near the cap, a pile adds what it can: at 97 ropes, one takes the count to 99, and the third rope is lost.

## Trivia

- Its price in a shop reads "EXTRA ROPE FOR $2500." on level 2, but from level 3 on, when the price is raised,
the message is made again from the item's name, "A ROPE PILE FOR $2750.", as the Rope Pile has no shop
description of its own ([A Spectacles for sale](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles-message))[^6][^23][^24].
- The game has an item object nothing makes, `oRopeBag`, drawn with the sprite of a rope's end, whose `type`
  is "Bomb Bag"[^25][^24].

## FAQ

### How many ropes are in a Rope Pile in Spelunky Classic?

3. The pickup message says "YOU GOT 3 MORE ROPES!", and the count can't go past 99.

### How much does a Rope Pile cost in Spelunky Classic?

$2,500 on level 2, the first with shops, and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $5,750 on level 15. General Stores and Clothing Shops sell it.

### Where do you find Rope Piles in Spelunky Classic?

In shops, and free in [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate): once every rarer item's roll fails, a Crate holds a Rope Pile or a [Bomb Bag](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb-bag) at even odds. They're also among the items buried in blocks, and each of the four items a [Yeti King](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/yeti-king) leaves can be one.

### Is there a rope shop in Spelunky Classic?

No. The [General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store) and the [Clothing Shop](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/clothing-shop) are the only shops that sell Rope Piles; no shop sells single ropes.
