# Crushes in Olmec's lair counted as Olmec's

From the spelunky.ai wiki: <https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmec-door-block-crush>. Verified against the spelunky.ai port [v0.1.11](https://github.com/851-labs/spelunky/releases/tag/v0.1.11) on 28 October 2026.

Crushes in Olmec's lair counted as Olmec's is a quirk of Spelunky Classic in which any crush in Olmec's lair is tallied as a death by Olmec.

The end-of-game statistics count deaths by what caused them, and a crush, the player's middle inside
something solid, has its own row. In [Olmec's Lair](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmecs-lair) it doesn't: every crush there is counted
against [Olmec](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmec), even one he has nothing to do with.

## What happens

A bomb has blown out the floor under the exit door of Olmec's Lair, and the player jumps the pit onto the
block left below it. Olmec, sinking in the lava off the screen, dies, and a new block appears under the door,
around the player's middle: he's crushed, and the game counts the death against Olmec[^1].

**Clip: The block under Olmec's door crushes the player, counted as Olmec's.** A bomb has blown out the floor under the exit door of Olmec's lair, and the player jumps the pit onto the block left below it. Olmec, sinking in the lava off screen, dies, and a new block appears under the door, around the player's middle: he's crushed, and the game counts the death against Olmec. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/quirks/olmec-door-block-crush/clip.mp4))

## Why

The player's step crushes him whenever his middle is inside a solid, and picks the row of the statistics by
the room:

```gml objects/oPlayer1/step.gml:1493-1503
if (collision_point(x, y, oSolid, 0, 0))
{
    if (global.plife > 0)
    {
        if (isRealLevel())
        {
            if (isRoom("rOlmec")) global.enemyDeaths[22] += 1;
            else global.miscDeaths[2] += 1;
        }
    }
    global.plife -= 99;
```

[`objects/oPlayer1/step.gml:1493-1503`](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/source/objects/oPlayer1/step#L1493-L1503), from `spelunky.gmk`, Spelunky Classic 1.1's source, © 2008, 2009 Derek Yu and Mossmouth, LLC ([Spelunky User License v1.1b](https://spelunky.ai/LICENSE.txt)).

`enemyDeaths[22]` is the OLMEC row, `miscDeaths[2]` the CRUSHED row[^2][^3]. Olmec's slam is the usual crush in his lair, and is his. But when
he dies, the lair's door becomes its exit, with a block of stone under it if there's no floor there:

```gml objects/oFinalBoss/step.gml:8-12
    if (not collision_point(640, 560, oSolid, 0, 0))
    {
        brick = instance_create(640, 560, oTemple);
        with brick { invincible = true; }
    }
```

[`objects/oFinalBoss/step.gml:8-12`](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/source/objects/oFinalBoss/step#L8-L12), from `spelunky.gmk`, Spelunky Classic 1.1's source, © 2008, 2009 Derek Yu and Mossmouth, LLC ([Spelunky User License v1.1b](https://spelunky.ai/LICENSE.txt)).

A player standing where it appears is crushed by it, and the death is still Olmec's[^4].

## Reproducing it

Blow out the floor under the exit door before Olmec dies, and stand in the hole, where the block under the
door goes, as he drowns. The replay, with seed 1, keeps Olmec alive in the lava by the left wall, runs across
the lair as he starts to sink, and drops a bomb by the exit door. Its blast blows out the floor under the door,
and the player jumps onto the block below, his middle at (651, 568). Olmec dies, the block under the door
crushes him, and the OLMEC row counts it, not CRUSHED[^5]. Olmec's own crush is in another replay[^6].

## In the port

The spelunky.ai port reproduces it exactly: it's in docs/quirks.md's list of the 1.1 source's bugs[^4], and the oracle's fingerprint of the replay pins both tallies. No option turns it off.

## FAQ

### Can the exit door crush you in Olmec's Lair?

The block under it can. When [Olmec](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmec) dies, a block of stone appears under the lair's exit door if the floor there is gone, so a player who has blown it out with a bomb and stands in its place is crushed, with however many hearts he has.

### Why is a crush in Olmec's Lair counted as a death by Olmec?

The game tallies a crush by the room it happens in, not by what did it. Every crush in [Olmec's Lair](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmecs-lair) goes in the statistics' OLMEC row, and every crush anywhere else in their CRUSHED row.

### Do the statistics count it on a custom level?

No. A crush on a custom level is counted in neither row: the game tallies deaths only on its own levels.
