# Endings

This page describes a secret.

Endings in Spelunky Classic follow beating Olmec: the player escapes an erupting volcano with a giant golden head, worth $50,000 on the final score.

The game has one ending, reached by beating [Olmec](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmec) at the bottom of the Temple
([Beating Olmec](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/beating-olmec) has how). It plays as three
short scenes: the volcano, the escape and the final score. Then come the credits and the high scores room.
The custom levels have an ending of their own, the last scene only. A game that ends in a death has no
ending: its final score is shown over the level ([Scoring](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/scoring#game-over)).

## How it works

### The door

When Olmec has drowned, the door at the right end of [Olmec's Lair](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmecs-lair)'s hall (the player came in
by the left one) becomes the way out[^1]; going through it, with up, starts the ending[^2][^3].
The game's clock stops there, as it runs only in a level[^4].

### The volcano

**Clip: The volcano.** The player leaves Olmec's Lair by its door and walks right through a cave above a lake of lava to a big chest. The chest opens and a giant golden head pops out beside him; lava wells up under the stone platform they stand on and lifts it, and outside the volcano erupts, throwing the player and the treasure into the sky. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/39b784c6a7dfc9d3/clips/endings/volcano/clip.mp4))

The player walks right along a cave above a lake of lava, the view following, and stops beside a big chest[^5][^6]. The chest opens and a
giant golden head pops out beside him[^7]. The lava then rises in
a column under the stone platform they stand on and lifts it, him and the treasure, while the screen shakes[^8][^9]. Outside, the
volcano erupts, and the player and the treasure are thrown out of it, small against the sky[^10][^11][^12]. The clip shows both scenes[^13].

The player in the ending is whoever he played as, the [Damsel](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/damsel) or the [Tunnel Man](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/tunnel-man)
included, and carries what he held, his [Jetpack](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/jetpack), and Kali's [ball and chain](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/ball-and-chain) if
he has one[^14][^15][^16][^17].

### The final score

**Clip: You made it!.** The player falls into the desert and lies stunned, and the golden head lands beside him. YOU MADE IT! The final score counts up to the $21125 he brought out, the treasure adds $50000, and the time, kills and saves follow; the screen fades to black: YOU SHALL BE REMEMBERED AS A HERO. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/39b784c6a7dfc9d3/clips/endings/tally/clip.mp4))

Once the treasure falls out of sight, the last scene starts[^18]. The player falls into a desert and lies stunned; the
treasure lands beside him, and he gets up[^19]. Then, with the
victory music, YOU MADE IT\![^20], the final score, counting up to
the player's money 1,000 and then 100 a step[^21], and 50 steps after
it has, the treasure's $50,000, with a thump[^22]. The game's time, the kills and the saves follow[^23].

Once the saves are shown, attack (or Enter, Escape or start) fades the screen out to YOU SHALL BE REMEMBERED
AS A HERO., and once more goes on to the credits; before then it does nothing, so the count can't be
hurried[^24][^25]. In the clip the
player brought out $21,125, and the final score is $71,125[^26]. The first two
scenes can be skipped to this one: the volcano's after 50 steps, the escape's at once[^27][^28].

### The credits

The Credits roll over a camel caravan crossing the desert, and attack fades them out[^29]. Then the win is recorded in the high scores, with the
game's time if the player took no shortcut ([Scoring](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/scoring#the-high-scores)), and the game goes to the high
scores room[^30].

### Custom levels

A custom level whose next level doesn't exist ends the chain with a scene of its own, the final score
without the treasure: YOU MADE IT!, the money counted up, the same $50,000 added, the
time, kills and saves, and YOU SHALL BE REMEMBERED AS A HERO.[^31][^32]. It goes to the high scores room without changing them,
as custom levels keep no score[^33].

## Numbers

| | Value | |
| --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------- | ----- |
| The treasure's bonus | $50,000 | [^34] |
| A custom level's ending's bonus | $50,000 | [^35] |
| Steps before the volcano scene can be skipped | 50 | [^36] |
| The final score's count | 1,000 a step, then 100, then the rest | [^37] |

## Examples

- The clips above follow a win from Olmec's door to the final score[^13][^26]. The same replay goes on through the credits to the high scores room[^38].
- A chain of three custom levels ends in the custom ending: the money counted up, the bonus added, then the
  high scores room[^39].

## Quirks

- What the player holds in the ending is drawn by a chain of checks of its name that tests for a Rock twice.
The second test is never reached, and the Rock shows all the same[^40][^41][^42].

## FAQ

### How do you win Spelunky Classic?

By beating [Olmec](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmec) in [Olmec's Lair](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmecs-lair), level 16: once he has drowned in the lava, the door at the right end of the lair's hall opens, and taking it starts the ending.

### How much is the treasure at the end of Spelunky Classic worth?

$50,000. The final score is the money the player carried out of Olmec's Lair, plus that.

### What happens after the ending in Spelunky Classic?

The credits roll over a camel caravan crossing the desert, then the win is recorded in the high scores (with its time, if the player took no shortcut) and the game goes to the high scores room.

### Do custom levels have an ending in Spelunky Classic?

Yes, a shorter one. When a custom level's next level doesn't exist, a YOU MADE IT! screen tallies the money, with the same $50,000 bonus, and goes to the high scores room without changing them.
