# Credits

This page describes a secret.

The credits of Spelunky Classic roll over a camel crossing the desert, after a win and when the player climbs out of the title screen by its rope.

The credits are six cards of text over a scene: a camel walks in from the right with the player on its back, slows
almost to a stop in the middle while the desert scrolls past and the credits music plays, and rides off to the left
at the end. There are two versions of the scene. After a win the desert is in daylight and a caravan follows the
camel, and the credits lead to the high scores room. From the title screen's rope it's night, the camel rides
alone, and the game quits after the credits.

## How it works

### Reaching them

- **After a win.** The final score's last press goes to the credits
  ([Endings](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/endings))[^1].
- **From the title screen.** Climbing the title screen's rope out of the top of the screen fades the title out to
  the credits[^2][^3].

### The scene

**Clip: The credits after a win.** The credits fade in on the desert. The Spelunker rides in on a camel, followed by two cavemen carrying the golden head, the credits music starts and the desert scrolls past: SPELUNKY, then A GAME BY DEREK YU, then PLATFORM ENGINE MARTIN PIECYK, with the sound effects and the screen scaling code. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/1d3f433106e37ef1/clips/credits/caravan/clip.mp4))

The screen fades in, and 20 steps later the camel comes in from the right edge, a pixel a
step[^4][^5]. Its rider is
the player as he played: the [Spelunker](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spelunker), the [Damsel](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/damsel) or the [Tunnel
Man](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/tunnel-man)[^6]. In the middle of the screen it slows to a hundredth of a pixel
a step and the credits music starts[^7]; the desert starts to scroll right,
with a shrub one time in 8 and otherwise a palm tree one time in 12, every 16 steps, and 20 steps later the first
card appears[^8][^9].

After a win, a caravan follows 64 pixels behind the camel: two cavemen carrying the golden head the ending brought
out of the volcano ([Endings](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/endings#the-volcano)), with a Damsel riding on top if the player saved any, or the Spelunker
if the player is the Damsel[^10][^11][^12]. In the clip, a win with no
Damsels saved, the caravan carries the head alone[^13].

From the title screen the scene is the intro's: the desert at night, its palm trees dark, with the moon and the
mountains of the intro drifting slowly while the camel crosses[^14][^15][^16][^17][^18].

### The cards

Each card is on screen for 140 steps, the last two for 240, with 40 steps between
them[^19][^20][^21]:

| Card | Text | |

The credits after a win draw the same cards[^28].

### The end

**Clip: The end of the credits.** The beta testers' names, then THANKS FOR PLAYING! SEE YOU NEXT ADVENTURE! The desert stops, the camel and the caravan ride off to the left, and the attack key fades the scene out to the high scores room. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/1d3f433106e37ef1/clips/credits/ride-off/clip.mp4))

40 steps after the last card, the desert stops and the camel and the caravan ride off to the left at 2 pixels a
step[^29][^30]. Once the last
of them is 64 pixels past the left edge, the screen fades out[^31][^32]. From the title screen the game then
quits[^33]. After a win the high scores are updated with the win
([Scoring](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/scoring#the-high-scores)) and the game goes to the high scores
room[^34].

Enter, Escape or the attack key fades the credits out early, once the camel has
appeared[^35]. In the clip, the attack key fades them out as the caravan
rides off[^36].

## Numbers

| | Value | |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------- |
| A card on screen | 140 steps (4.67 seconds); the last two 240 steps (8 seconds) | [^37][^38] |
| From one card to the next | 180 steps (6 seconds); after the last two 280 steps (9.33 seconds) | [^39][^40] |
| The camel walking in | 1 pixel per step (30 per second) | [^41] |
| The camel during the cards | 0.01 pixels per step (0.3 per second) | [^42] |
| The camel riding off | 2 pixels per step (60 per second) | [^43] |

## Examples

- The win's credits, from the camel's arrival to the third card[^13], and from the beta
testers to the fade[^36], cut from a winning
  game[^44].
- The title rope's credits, with the shortcuts locked[^18][^45]. Playing as the Damsel, she climbs out of the title screen as the
Spelunker (The Damsel leaving as the Spelunker)[^46], but rides the credits' camel as
  herself[^47].

## Quirks

- **A key during the fade-in doesn't skip it.** The credits' keys only work once the camel has appeared, which is
after the fade-in has ended, so the line that would end the fade-in at once never
  runs[^48][^4][^46].

## FAQ

### Who made Spelunky Classic?

Derek Yu. The credits name Martin Piecyk for the platform engine, ChevyRay for the screen scaling code, Dr Petter's SFXR for the sound effects, George Buzinkai and Jonathan Perry for the music, and 21 beta testers.

### How do you see the credits in Spelunky Classic?

Win the game, or climb the rope on the title screen out of the top of the screen. After a win they go on to the high scores room; from the title, the game quits after them.

### Can you skip the credits in Spelunky Classic?

Yes. Once the camel has appeared, Enter, Escape or the attack key fades the credits out.

### What's carried behind the camel in the credits?

After a win, two cavemen follow the camel carrying the golden head from the ending, with a rescued Damsel riding on it if the player saved any. From the title screen the camel rides alone.
