Its Shopkeeper welcomes the player with "WELCOME TO SPOONY'S CLOTHING SHOP!", his name one of 32 drawn at
random[^6][^7]. It
sells six pieces of equipment the player wears for the rest of the game, [Spring Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spring-shoes),
[Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles), [Climbing Gloves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/climbing-gloves), the [Pitcher's Mitt](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/pitchers-mitt), the
[Cape](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/cape) and [Spike Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spike-shoes), and Rope Piles. Like every shop it's a side
room off the way through a level, with four wares on its floor and the [Shopkeeper](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/shopkeeper) beside
them.

## Stock

The shop has four wares, and each is rolled on its own[^8][^9]. Each try first rolls for a Rope Pile, 1 in 20; failing
that, it picks one of the six pieces of equipment, each as likely, and takes it if the level hasn't got
one. A try that picks a piece the level has makes the next try's Rope Pile roll likelier, 1 in 19, then 1
in 18 and so on, so by the twentieth try a Rope Pile is certain[^10]:

| Ware | Roll | |
| ----------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | ----- |
| Rope Pile | 1 in 20 on the first try, 1 in 19 on the second... | [^11] |
| [Spring Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spring-shoes) | Otherwise 1 in 6, if the level has none | [^12] |
| [Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles) | Otherwise 1 in 6, if the level has none | [^13] |
| [Climbing Gloves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/climbing-gloves) | Otherwise 1 in 6, if the level has none | [^14] |
| [Pitcher's Mitt](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/pitchers-mitt) | Otherwise 1 in 6, if the level has none | [^15] |
| [Cape](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/cape) | Otherwise 1 in 6, if the level has none | [^16] |
| [Spike Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spike-shoes) | Otherwise 1 in 6, if the level has none | [^17] |

So a Clothing Shop sells each piece once at most, and Rope Piles more often the more pieces the level
already has. The check is for the piece on the level, not the player's, so the shop sells a piece the
player already wears, and buying it again changes nothing[^18].

## Prices

A ware costs its base price on level 2, and 10% of that more for each level after it[^19]. Each ware's own page has its price on every level:

| Ware | Level 2 | Level 5 | Level 9 | Level 13 | Level 15 |
| ----------------------------------------------------------- | ------- | ------- | ------- | -------- | -------- |
| Rope Pile | $2,500 | $3,250 | $4,250 | $5,250 | $5,750 |
| [Pitcher's Mitt](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/pitchers-mitt) | $4,000 | $5,200 | $6,800 | $8,400 | $9,200 |
| [Spike Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spike-shoes) | $4,000 | $5,200 | $6,800 | $8,400 | $9,200 |
| [Spring Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spring-shoes) | $5,000 | $6,500 | $8,500 | $10,500 | $11,500 |
| [Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles) | $8,000 | $10,400 | $13,600 | $16,800 | $18,400 |
| [Climbing Gloves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/climbing-gloves) | $8,000 | $10,400 | $13,600 | $16,800 | $18,400 |
| [Cape](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/cape) | $12,000 | $15,600 | $20,400 | $25,200 | $27,600 |

A Black Market's Clothing Shop prices its wares by the level the market is on[^20].

## Shopkeeper

The Shopkeeper sells as in every shop ([the General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store#shopkeeper) has the details): he
names the price of a ware the player holds, and the pay key buys it[^21][^22]. A
piece of equipment goes on as it's bought, with its message, and a Rope Pile adds its ropes[^23][^24].
A theft, a bomb lit in the shop or a block of its walls broken angers him, and he gives the wares away and
attacks with his [Shotgun](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/shotgun)[^25][^26].

## Stealing

**Clip: Shoplifting from a Clothing Shop.** In a Clothing Shop on level 5, the shopkeeper prices the spectacles the player picks up at $10,400. He runs and jumps out of the shop with them, which puts them on, and the shopkeeper fires after him and misses. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/9298410b19d5e050/clips/clothing-shop/theft/clip.mp4))

Carrying a piece out of the shop's room unpaid angers the Shopkeeper ("COME BACK HERE, THIEF!") and puts it
on, as if bought. Whether it goes on at once depends on whether the player or the piece, held in front of
him, leaves the room first: if the piece does, the player is left holding it, free, and picking it up
again puts it on[^27][^28][^18]. In the clip, the player picks up the Spectacles, which the Shopkeeper prices at
$10,400 on level 5, and runs and jumps out of the shop with them: they go on, and the Shopkeeper fires
after him[^29].

A theft marks the player a thief into the next level, whose exit has a Shopkeeper waiting by it and whose
shops' wares are free ([the General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store#stealing) has the rules)[^30].

## Locations

A level from 2 to 15 that rolls a shop builds one of seven kinds, each as likely, so a shop is a Clothing
Shop one time in seven (one in six on a Temple sacrifice pit level, which never has a
Kissing Parlor)[^31][^1][^32][^4].
[The Mines](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/mines#shops) has how levels roll shops. A [Black Market](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/black-market) has five shops that
sell items, as a rule one of each kind, a Clothing Shop among them ([the General
Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store#trivia) has the exception)[^5][^18].

## Trivia

- Its sign shows a shirt[^33].
- Past level 2, the Shopkeeper names a ware without a shop name of its own by its type, so the clip's
Spectacles are "A SPECTACLES FOR $10400.", and the Spike Shoes "A SPIKE SHOES"[^18][^34].
- A [Rare Shop](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/rare-shop) sells all six of its pieces too, among eleven[^35].

## FAQ

### What does the Clothing Shop sell in Spelunky Classic?

Four wares, each one of six pieces of equipment, at most one of each a level: [Spring Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spring-shoes), [Spectacles](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spectacles), [Climbing Gloves](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/climbing-gloves), the [Pitcher's Mitt](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/pitchers-mitt), the [Cape](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/cape) and [Spike Shoes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/spike-shoes); or a Rope Pile, as many as its rolls give.

### What is the most expensive thing in a Clothing Shop in Spelunky Classic?

The Cape, at $12,000 on level 2 and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $27,600 on level 15.

### Does buying equipment twice do anything in Spelunky Classic?

No. A Clothing Shop can stock a piece the player already wears, as it only checks that the level hasn't got one, and buying it again changes nothing.
