The Bomb Bag is an item in Spelunky Classic that adds 3 to the player's count when he takes it; shops sell it from $2,500.

A Bomb Bag isn't kept: taking one adds its 3 [bombs](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb) to the count beside
the bomb icon at the top of the screen, and the bag is gone ([Bombs and ropes](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bombs-and-ropes) has how the count works).
The [General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store), the [Bomb Shop](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb-shop) and the [Weapon Shop](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/weapon-shop) sell it,
and [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate) hold it more often than anything but a [Rope Pile](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/rope-pile).

## Effect

**Clip: Bombs and ropes picked up.** The player walks over a bomb bag, a rope pile and a bomb box, and his counts at the top of the screen go from 4 bombs and 4 ropes to 19 and 7. He throws a bomb ahead, walks back and throws a rope up, and each takes one from its count. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/bombs-and-ropes/pickups/clip.mp4))

A free Bomb Bag is taken as soon as the player touches it, unless he's dead or stunned or the bag is inside
a block: his bombs go up by 3, a flashing "+BOMB" rises from where the bag was, and the
message "YOU GOT 3 MORE BOMBS!" shows[^1]. Paying for one, or
carrying one out of its shop, does the same[^4]. A count above
99 is cut back to 99 at the start of his next step[^5]. In the clip, the player walks over a Bomb Bag, a Rope Pile and
a [Bomb Box](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb-box), and his bombs go from 4 to 7 at the bag[^6].

**Clip: Buying bombs in a Bomb Shop.** The player walks into a Bomb Shop on level 2 and its shopkeeper welcomes him. He picks up a bag of three bombs for $2500 and pays, and his bombs go from 4 to 7. ([video](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/media/clips/bomb-shop/buy/clip.mp4))

One for sale is picked up as any ware is, and stays in the player's hands: the
[Shopkeeper](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/shopkeeper) names it "A BAG OF 3 BOMBS" and its price, and the pay key buys it[^7][^8]. In the
second clip, the player picks one up in a Bomb Shop on level 2, pays $2,500, and his bombs go from 4 to 7[^9].

Each shop adds 10% of the base price for each level past the second[^14]. Shops are made from level 2 on[^15], and level 16, [Olmec's Lair](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/olmecs-lair), has none:

A Crate's item appears where the player stands as he opens it, so a Bomb Bag out of one is taken at once[^16]. Bomb Bags aren't among the items buried in blocks, the
[Dice House](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/dice-house)'s prizes or [Kali](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/kalis-favour)'s gifts[^17][^18]. In custom
levels, it's the [level editor](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/level-editor)'s tile `.`[^19].

Carrying one out of a shop without paying adds its bombs and angers the Shopkeeper, as with any ware
([General Store](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/general-store#stealing))[^20].

## Interactions

- **[Bombs](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb).** An explosion throws a Bomb Bag aside, as it does most items, and knocks one out of
  the player's hands[^21]. The bag's bombs don't go
  off.
- **Being stunned.** A stunned player doesn't take a bag he's lying on until he gets up[^22].

## Tips

- Near the cap, a bag adds what it can: at 97 bombs, one takes the count to 99, and the third bomb is lost.

## FAQ

### How many bombs are in a Bomb Bag in Spelunky Classic?

3. The pickup message says "YOU GOT 3 MORE BOMBS!", and the count can't go past 99. A [Bomb Box](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/bomb-box) holds 12.

### How much does a Bomb Bag cost in Spelunky Classic?

$2,500 on level 2, the first with shops, and 10% of that more on each level after it, up to $5,750 on level 15. General Stores, Bomb Shops and Weapon Shops sell it.

### Where do you find Bomb Bags in Spelunky Classic?

In shops, and in [Crates](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/crate): once every rarer item's roll fails, a Crate holds a Bomb Bag or a [Rope Pile](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/rope-pile) at even odds. The Crate in the [Tutorial](https://spelunky.ai/wiki/tutorial) always holds one.

### Do you have to carry a Bomb Bag in Spelunky Classic?

No. A free one is used up as soon as the player touches it, adding its bombs to his count; only one for sale stays in his hands until he pays for it or carries it out of the shop.
